3D CAD + 3DVIA Studio = Cool Apps!

“3D Modelers” usually fall into three major groups:

3D Design Engineers (CAD design)
3D Artists/Animators (Digital Content Creators – DCC)
Architects/Interior Designers

However, all three groups of “3D Modelers” use very different software tools, and rarely do you see much overlap, as 3D software is built specifically by industry.

HOWEVER…when it comes time to communicating these designs, that’s when we can see these groups collide.

Typically we see the second group (3D Artists/Animators/Game designers) using Gaming technology to create, well…games. But 3DVIA Studio is an excellent tool for anyone who needs to:

AVATAR INVASION! Build Your Own Avatar

Last week, 3DVIA announced that you can now create personalized Avatars on 3dvia.com, and use them in your 3DVIA Scenes. See the announcement here.

We partnered with Evolver to bring our users this functionality, for FREE!

However, there has been one problem, we have created an AVATAR INVASION! Traffic to 3DVIA Scenes has risen, and all sorts of mischief has been happening within your Scenes. Everyone has been turning into Avatars, and we can’t stop it!!!

Seriously, the project has gone well, and 3DVIA, once again has offered our users new 3D functionality, for free.

So, login today, and start creating your Avatars.

Be sure to visitt the Dance Party Scene, which contains the dance floor used in the video. The Dance floor functionality was created using 3DVIA Studio.

Cliff’s Clips: Create Google Sketchup Virtual Worlds…for Free

I recently traveled to New York City, and was reminded of the great architecture in the city. A clash of modern and traditional architecture on every corner. As you are probably aware, can take a virtual tour of New York using Google Earth, or Bing Maps online, however, if you wanted to take an online tour of buildings, interiors, and take a closer look at buildings, Google and Bing Maps do not provide an answer.

I had a recent email conversation with an architect, who was interested in doing just this. She had created a Sketchup 3D model, and wanted to be able to walk through the model, and show her customers. I told her that you can not only walk-through the model, but you can do this all online, in a virtual environment, and it’s FREE!

A Virtual Photo Shoot with 3DVIA for Photoshop

Last week Adobe promoted our 3DVIA plugin for Photoshop video on the 550,000+ strong Photoshop Fan page. New functionality within Adobe Photoshop CS4 and CS5 allows Photoshop Extended users the ability to create a virtual photo shoot, and this is easier with the direct download from 3dvia.com.

That video, shown here, shows how simple it is to create a great looking poster within minutes using the 3DVIA plugin and Photoshop CS5 Extended. Most of this can also be done within CS4 as well.

Also, The Plugin now exists for Mac users as well.

Embed 3D Content on Your Website or Blog

Most websites and Blogs are made up of text, images, and sometimes Video. A few include Flash applications as well, but the number that contain true 3D immersive content are very rare. The reason this number is low is due to the difficulty of building 3D Apps for the web…before NOW!

What is 3DVIA Studio?

The most common question we receive lately is: “What is 3DVIA Studio?”. The answer is sometimes not as easy to answer, as it depends on the audience. 3DVIA Studio is something different depending on if you are a programmer, an artist, a designer, an engineer.

The short answer is: 3DVIA Studio is a 3D game development engine, BUT…it’s not just for games, and it’s not just for programmers, and it’s…well…

The Best of GDC 2010

There was one BIG message at the Game Developers Conference this year, and it was not “Mobile”. 3DVIA made a huge impression at the conference, as we released a new game engine, opened a new product, and showed everyone our new 3D game for Facebook: Billions.

I will say that these are the two biggest announcements from 3DVIA.

The Classroom of the Future is NOW!

I disguised myself as a 4th grader to enter a primary school and see how children are using computers and the internet to learn. I discovered that children are not using the internet just for research, but are learning how to build and use 3D easily with 3DVIA tools. This generation (ofter referred to as Generation-Z), with the power of the internet and computers, will be able to communicate on the web in 3D (see the connection: 3D and “Z”, as in “Z-axis”?)

3DVIA Shape and 3DVIA Scenes are simple tools which allow anyone, even school-aged children to build and express their ideas with just a computer and the internet…no glue necessary.

Best of SolidWorks World 2010

SolidWorks World 2010 was a great event!

This was my first SWW ever, and I was extremely impressed with the presentations, the strong community of users, and how well organized the event was. It was great to speak to so many users, and meet other SolidWorks and Dassault Systèmes employees. From my perspective, there were four hot topics that came out of the show, which I share in this quick video.

Thanks to the SolidWorks team for their input in this video. Jeremy Luchini designed the Hot Rod electric car model in SolidWorks, which you can see here on 3dvia.com.
